Essentially, the solar panel is mounted on a swivel, and as the sun moves, you have to manually shift the panel to align it with the sun's position. This requires a lot of time, effort, and energy because you have to do this every hour or so if you want to keep cultivating sunlight. Even if you're not busy, that's a major inconvenience, and if you do get busy or otherwise leave the area, your panel will spend most of the day not absorbing any sunlight.


Active trackers, or the turrets we talked about earlier, are the most innovative solar tracking systems available, and they’re easily the most desirable options on the market today. These trackers use hydraulics and motors, along with sensors that detect sunlight, to actively track the sun and keep the panel aligned in the optimal position. This takes all the manual work out of it, and it’s extremely reliable. Passive options are a little different. They're automatic, but they don't use mechanical parts to automatically move the panel. Instead, they're filled with a liquid that evaporates as it's exposed to sunlight. If oriented correctly initially, the liquid will evaporate and allow the panel to be more or less oriented. This doesn't help much with overcast, and it can end up in a position that isn't optimal. However, it's still a better option than a manual joint that requires constant monitoring.


You also have to consider the axis options available. The axis is the joint that determines the directions that the panel can be adjusted in. For example, a single-axis turret will only allow you to move the panel up and down, or if it's designed to twist, the panel will only be able to move side-to-side.


That’s a major drawback, because you have limited articulation options, and you won’t be able to stay aligned with the sun at all times. A major part of maximizing energy cultivation is maximizing the efficiency of energy gathering, and this fact limits that.


However, you can also get a dual-axis system that can be articulated in multiple directions. Whether it needs to be angled upward, downward, and side-to-side simultaneously. This ensures you can always keep your panel properly aligned.
